An agency relationship can be terminated at any time by:
- Agreement: The relationship can be brought to an end by mutual agreement between the parties, either in writing or orally.
- Specified Period: If the agreement provides for the appointment of the agent for a specified period of time, the agency will end automatically when that period expires.
- Specified Event: If the agreement provides for the agency to terminate upon the occurrence of a specified event, the agency will end upon the happening of that event.
- Act of the Parties: The agency can be terminated by the actions of the parties involved.
- Performance by the Agent: If the agent accomplishes the particular task or specific purpose for which they were appointed, the agency will terminate.
- Revocation by Principal: The principal can revoke the agent's authority at any time. However, unilateral revocation not in accordance with the provisions of the agency agreement may render the principal liable to the agent for breach of the agreement.
- Renunciation by Agent: The agent can renounce their power by refusing to act or by notifying the principal that they will not act for them.
Notice of revocation should be given to any third party as soon as possible to avoid liability.
