What is floor area?

Floor area generally refers to the amount of space covered by a building’s floors. One example is the Gross Floor Area (GFA), which is the total area of the covered floor space measured between the centre line of party walls, including external walls but excluding voids. Another example is the Net Lettable Area (NLA), which specifically includes the floor space between the internal finished surfaces of permanent internal walls and the internal finished surfaces of dominant portions of the permanent outer building walls, while excluding areas such as toilets, plant rooms, and other standard facilities.
